Happy New Year
Happy New Year
It’s 2018 and we’re ready and raring to go! This year, we’ll be focusing on a specific practise each month and learning more about the origin, benefits and ways in which they promote good health and wellbeing.
We’ll also ask practitioners what it means to be ‘healthy’ and why they decided to practise their chosen therapy.
To gain a further cheeky little insight about the practitioners here (and to satisfy my craving for music, in everything I do) we will be asking: what is the best song of all time and why? Feel free to join in on that one yourself, at any time.
January
This month, we’ll be focusing on Hypnotherapy: the ways in which it can help with negative thoughts, anxiety and depression, as well as how it can be used to improve self-management, our self-awareness and help maintain a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. Heather Fletcher and Karen Bromley will help to explain how they believe Hypnotherapy can help us overcome the above and they will tell us why Hypnotherapy is their chosen therapy.
February
In February, we will take a look at Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and how it supports wellbeing as a whole and it’s role in weight management. Of course we will also provide information about Lymphoedema and how other specialised practises incorporate MLD, for the best client / patient outcomes. Lymphoedema Awareness Week starts 5 March and we shall continue to provide information right through to the following month.
March
March brings us to the Acupuncture Awareness Week (AAW). We’ll provide a thorough guide for Traditional Acupuncture as well as defining key differences between Traditional Acupuncture vs. ‘Dry needling’ or ‘Medical / Western Acupuncture’. We will share current research in acupuncture and compile a booklet of research which will remain available in our health and wellbeing library.
We will also take the chance to look at the origins of Yang Family style Tai Chi and the benefits of practising such a beautiful art, focusing on why there are benefits for all ages and walks of life.
April
Moving in to April, we’ll be asking Kerry Kinnear why she became a podiatrist and providing the opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have relating to foot health. The benefits of podiatry go far beyond presentable feet and we’ll be focusing on a few conditions that can be helped or managed with the expertise of a podiatrist.
May
In May, it’s the annual Mental Health Awareness Week. We’ll have a special focus on the ways that the Woolpit Counselling Service can help support you or your family during difficult times. Again we offer you the chance to ask questions regarding your experiences with mental health issues, good or bad, this time to be published anonymously and provide an open account of why it’s felt that counselling, personal development or simply speaking your mind has helped your mental health. We hope that this will help to expand the ever-increasing awareness of the importance for good mental health and how to approach those in need or recognise when to seek help.
June
June 27 is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Day and with that, we’ll be focusing on a relatively new therapy here at Woolpit Complementary: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). The NHS guidelines have approved EMDR for the treatment of PTSD as well as other symptoms of stress. We will look further into the science of EMDR and show you how it works in practise. Tina Penistone will explain why she trained as an EMDR Practitioner and how it may help others with past experiences of trauma.
July
Sports Massage and Remedial Therapy is often perceived as a treatment for those with a sporting lifestyle. However, Although very beneficial for sporty types, that notion couldn’t be further from the truth. In July, we’ll look at specific techniques used to get the best results for everyday aches and pains, including lower back, shoulder and neck. We’ll also ask Dan Marshall to show us how he incorporates additional techniques such as dry needling and kinesio taping in his practise.
Exploring other realms of physical therapy, we shall also get to grips with Osteopathy and the Bowen Technique to understand why they were developed and understand what kind of treatment might work for certain Muscular Skeletal conditions.
August
Debbie Greenslade provides homeopathy and nutritional supplementation for a wide number of of conditions and symptoms. In August, many of us will have experienced the dreaded hay fever season and its potential to linger, making it hard to enjoy the great outdoors. We’ll learn how the best time for treatment is in the depth of winter, as well as what else we can prepare for, to ensure we’re fighting fit before the cold and flu season.
September
September is home to World Reflexology Week and we’ll be providing information about the benefits of reflexology as well as a special focus on Reproflexology for fertility, Maternity reflexology and revisit combined approaches that incorporate reflexology such as reflexology lymphatic drainage. We will ask Charmaine Clarke how she started as a reflexologist and what the most important aspects are, in relation to lifestyle and wellbeing.
October
Medical Thermography can be a great indicator for observing breast health and certain types of inflammation. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we’ll be covering the topic of breast cancer as well as other conditions that medical thermography can help to identify. We will also be asking Janet van Dam why she feels that medical thermography is beneficial for monitoring other illnesses and what it’s like to have a screening with thermographic equipment.
November
What is the Thrive Programme? What can it help with? November 1, will be National Stress Awareness Day. Stress can cause anxiety about many aspects in life and the Thrive Programme is a great tool for anyone looking for a more self-motivated approach in achieving resolution or overcoming stress and anxiety. This results-driven programme is delivered like a course and within a framework and Kate Patterson will show how it helps overcome your mental obstacles.
December
December will bring us to our final topic, which is rather varied… There just aren’t enough months in the year! We will provide a combination of articles and interviews to show the positive impact of holistic massages like Swedish and hot stone massage, Indian head massage and other therapeutic practises showing how they can improve your sense of wellbeing. We’ll also highlight one or two key messages from the year.
Lots of information will be referenced from books and journals within our wellbeing library collection as well as online journals and resources. We hope you enjoy the above just as much as we do and please comment, ask questions or pop in to see us, if you’d like to.
We provide free initial consultations to anyone in need of information regarding treatment or therapy options. Overall, it’s about what works for you, as an individual.
A Happy New Year to you all and thank you for reading this post. Stay tuned, 2018 is a special year for us (it will be our 5th year anniversary in October) and we look forward to sharing it with you.
